Dads On Duty Program Overview and Agenda

As we prepare for another exciting year at Belgrade Schools, we are also looking at innovative ways to include parents & the community in our schools.

On the advice of a Belgrade school trustee, I researched a program she had heard about, which has been highly successful in the state of Louisiana. This program called "Dads on Duty", seeks to reduce the number of "serious incidents" in high schools. In fact, one high school that has implemented this program, reported the reduction of "serious incidents" in their school from 23 to O within three days of implementation.

Although we are not dealing with the same types of violence as some other states, we have had an increase in students reporting that they feel uneasy at school, or not feeling connected to others at their school. As we all know, just the sheer size of a school can be intimidating for some students. The presence of an adult in the hallway while changing classes, or as they enter the school, will likely create a more positive school environment, & lessen the anxiety for those students. Additionally, research reflects that having adults in close proximity to students is often all that is needed to prevent negative behaviors from occurring.

Just to be clear, we are not looking for disciplinarians, simply people who care about the success of all students. People who want to learn about the process of educating children, the challenges & successes of working in schools, & those who value the idea that all students should have the opportunity to experience a positive learning environment. We also want to stress that this is not an opportunity to work with just your child, rather focusing on the best experience for all students.

With the difficulties in hiring adequate staff in some areas, this also provides "eyes & ears" to assist the management staff, who can't be everywhere at all times.

A training for those interested in participating is scheduled for July 26th• Attached is the agenda for the training, as well as the time, location & topics to be covered. We have proposed this concept to the local VFW & they expressed their full support & participation. We hope you feel the same.

Let's continue to grow & nurture our fantastic school system together.
