New Curriculum Resources
The RULER approach was adopted as a district-wide initiative to help increase positive interactions and promote achievement in our schools. This year, school personnel and students will focus on practicing the five RULER Skills described below.
R - Recognizing Emotions
Identifying emotions in oneself and others by reading facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, and paying attention to signals in our bodies.
U - Understanding Emotions
Knowing the causes of emotions and how emotions influence our thoughts, actions, and decisions.
L - Labeling Emotions
Connecting an emotional experience to specific feeling words to describe it.
E - Expressing Emotions
Knowing how and when to display or show our emotions, depending on who we are with, where we are, and what we are doing.
R - Regulating Emotions
Knowing and using effective strategies to manage our emotions.
RULER Resources
In April 2023, the school board adopted the Bridges in Mathematics program by the Math Learning Center for grades K–4 and Envision by Savvas for grades 5–8.
Details
A team of teachers looked at evidence-based math programs, narrowing the field from 7 to 4 to 2.
K–4 Bridges by the Math Learning Center (finished second during last math adoption), more activity-based, better at developing number sense which is critical, materials are more appropriate for primary grades, and more motivating for students.
5–8 Envision by Savvas (adopted by Belgrade High School in 2021), good for upper elementary students, includes a Spanish version, and offers great online resources.
We conducted a 6-week pilot of the top two programs in grades K–4. The feedback from pilot teachers was heavily weighted in the vetting process.
Rationale
Improving our students' math performance has been a priority. Having a primary resource that is proven to be effective is an important step toward that goal.
Professional Development
Each program will provide professional development prior to the school year. K–4 instructional coaches will offer ongoing support, while Savvas will provide online support for math instructors.
